David Lloyd’s gallery is used for one weekend annually for a competition and subsequent exhibition of the David Lloyd Youth Art Competition for Hamilton primary and intermediate school pupils, which he established in 2010.
The initial competition was Waikato-wide, open to both primary and secondary school students, and attracting a relatively small 35 to 40 entries. Now it is open only to Hamilton primary and intermediate students, and attracts 60 to 70 entries. Artists are confined to using a canvass of A2 maximum size, with the art either in paint or drawing. The works are judged by sculptor Gaye Jurisch. Eight winners are selected, and their work is displayed to family and friends in the David Lloyd Gallery, and later is put up in the Wallace Gallery in Morrinsville.
The winners also are provided with a weekend of tutorials at the David Lloyd Gallery and Studio with Gaye Jurisch. In 2014 David brought in a Wintec Media Arts intern to run the event.
