Massed eels are a metaphor for the life force of a River; executed in soft fumed pit-firing techniques and contrasted with precious crystalline glazed water vessels.
In this exhibition the Waikato River carries me with it on a journey to try to understand the Mauri of the Waikato by both contemplating and describing the River in terms of not an object of ownership, nor even than an ecosystem but rather some-thing that contains its own life principle, an essential vitality of being.
Nicolette is a Hamilton artist who began her ceramic journey in 2015 when she began a Diploma in ceramic arts with Otago Polytech. Still early in her career, she has already exhibited locally and nationally and been selected for exhibitions that include the National Ceramics Exhibition and Waiclay in 2017, and the Pescatore (2018). She has and received both merit and excellence awards for her work and in 2016 she was awarded the highest aggregate points ever awarded in the Polytechnic’s level 5 assessment. This exhibition is her final exhibition for that Diploma and her first solo exhibition.
